Recently, I got my hands on ‘Eat Stop Eat’ by Brad Pilon. So here is my quick review of Eat Stop Eat.
“Dude, you’re trying to lose weight, but you’re doing it horribly wrong. Your diet is 90% of your fat loss, and you have been neglecting it all along, and focusing on all the wrong stuff. Change how you eat.”
I have to admit, I’ve never been much of a breakfast person … But people keep telling you that you have to ‘eat breakfast like a king’, because it is the most important meal of the day … I’m sure you’ve also heard that you have to eat six meals a day when you are on a diet? Now, what Brad Pilon teaches is a different philosophy.
Who is Brad Pilon?
By the way, someone may not hear about Brad Pilon before , so let’s find out who Brad Pilon is, shall we?
Brad Pilon is a Canadian nutrition expert and fitness enthusiast who is specialized in intermittent fasting as it relates to losing weight and gaining muscle. When he was in high school, he started to collect issues of Fitness&Muscle and Flex Magazine. With 4 years of University life in Guelph Ontario, Canada , Eat Stop Eat is the result of the Graduate Research he did during that time.
What is Eat Stop Eat About?
Eat stop eat ,created by Brad Pilon in 2007, more than a diet or an xx-week get fit program, it is a lifestyle change. The Eat Stop Eat method suggested starting with very tiny, tiny changes – like skipping 1 meal, reducing the quantity of dinner, and so on. You won’t get detailed exercise and eating plans — but it will tell you how you can lose weight and still enjoy almost any food you want. It was a step by step guide to over 2 months of dieting regime packed into a simple to follow user manual.
You can freely drink water and other non-caloric beverages during the fast, but no food. After the 24 hour fast, you eat a regular meal. As Brad explains, “The best way to eat after fasting is to act as if you didn’t fast”. Don’t overeat because you haven’t eaten in 24 hours; just eat a regular meal.
Those of you that haven’t looked into intermittent fasting may find this odd. However, over the recent years, fasting over shorter periods has become an increasingly popular way to lose weight.
Eat stop eat is no doubt the very best diet to lose weight. It is based on intermittent fasting which made sure that you not only have the best diet to lose weight, but also that your weight loss diet plan is as enjoyable as possible..
Some people call this book controversial, after all it isn’t your typical diet. But why not try something new?
What Is Intermittent Fasting?
First of all, fasting isn’t something new. Almost every major religion and culture has some sort of fasting in it’s rituals and traditions.
If we rewind a couple of thousand years back, when we lived like hunters and gatherers in small communities, it is clear that we couldn’t eat six small meals every day.
We ate big when we found something, or whenever the hunting paid off … But more often than not, people would have to go for long periods of time without eating. We had no way of conserving food (this was before the fridge) so meat would have to be eaten when it was fresh.
Obviously, we aren’t going to live like cavemen, but the takeaway here is that we’re not made to eat every couple of hours. We are made to eat like our forefathers did — whenever we get food.
Also, modern research supports that fasting for as much as 24 hours is an effective weight loss tool.
Several other benefits of fasting has also been confirmed, like:
- Positive effects on insulin levels
- Muscle retention when losing weight
What Do You Get?
You get a comprehensive manual, written for beginners as well as the experienced.
You will be provided with the tools, but there are no meal plans or workout schedules included. As such, this might be for the more advanced, or those of you that want to try a completely new approach to dieting.
It leaves more to you.
Brad Pilon is well known within the field of nutrition, and the manual is referenced to several peer reviewed studies. You can tell when you read it, that it is something that he spent time writing.
It carries the same quality of writing as several university text books I’ve read on the subject, but with a more down to earth informal tone.
From the table of contents, we see that the book offers:
- Fasting and exercise
- Effects on metabolism
- Health benefits
- Increased weight loss
- Decreased insulin
- Reduced Risk of Diabetes
- and much more …
The Best Part About The Program
Personally, I like the fact that it is a lifestyle change — not some grape fruit or soup diet where everything is written in stone. Like my friend Monica, who is a personal trainer, told me once: “Losing weight is easy, keeping it off is hard“.
This statement reflects a lot of what I see daily when working as a personal trainer.
We are able to help people shed off the weight. After a while, they tend to get lazy (as they’ve accomplished their target), and if they haven’t incorporated the new healthy changes into their new diet — they are quickly getting back to square one.
Though, for someone just starting out, a typical 3 month program (like The Venus Factor) may be easier to deal with. Don’t mistake me, The Venus Factor also requires you to change your lifestyle, but it’s an easier program to start out with.
Any diet with a caloric deficit will work to some extent, like Mr. Pilon writes in the introductory chapter:
This is because for short periods of time, every diet will work if it recommends
some form of caloric restriction. And if you follow a calorie restricted diet you
will lose weight, guaranteed. The problem is, you simply can’t follow a
restrictive diet for a long period of time. Sure, a truly dedicated individual can
follow a very restrictive diet for 12 weeks and get into phenomenal shape. With
the right amount of dedication, a person can even look like a model from the
cover of a fitness magazine. And a very small, very unique group can do this for
years on end. For the rest of us, this way of eating is too restrictive, too intrusive on our lives, and far too limiting to be done effectively for any real length of time.
On the contrary, I think the book itself looks a bit boring.Eat stop eat can be a little difficult getting into. People who have never followed a weight loss diet plan in general may struggle getting in to a a system where they won’t be able to eat anything for a 24 hour period. But once people get used to the eat stop eat method they can reap its benefits. As many happy users have said in their eat stop eat review eat stop eat has changed their lives and it is the best weight loss diet plan.
The writing is excellent, but there could have been more illustrations and diagrams — but maybe I’m a bit to accustomed to the online world? I read it from cover to cover, but each section stands on it’s own. I recommend that you skim through it at first, and then go and read it more thoroughly.
Questions With Fasting (Tester by Richard Nikoley）
How is fasting? Does it make you feel hungry all the time? How to stop eating?
Ahh, the questions everyone asks!
First，let’s take a look at what Brad Pilon answers a question about how to stop eating with Eat Stop Eat:
Then, you can see what tester Richard Nikoley said, I was a bit worried that I would have to walk around hungry all day. The first two days, I did feel a bit hungry during the fasting … Not all the time, but I would suddenly get hungry, then the feeling went away and came back a few hours later.
At day 3 my body had more or less adapted to the new pattern.
The following days, I did not feel hungry until maybe 15-30 minutes before my fasting phase was over — just like I normally would before a meal.
It also made me feel more energetic at the workouts, contrary to what I would think.
